Energy efficient milk cooling with intelligent control

Develop a system for energy optimal milk cooling by adjusting the system, frequency control refrigeration compressors and heat exchangers to produce hot water and subcooling of the refrigerant. In addition, the development of a management to ensure optimal concurrency between cold and heat needs and which can adapt the operation by price fluctuations in the electricity market.
Based on pilot studies it can be concluded that there are significant savings to be gained by optimizing the installation and operation of combined installations for heating and cooling milk. It will be possible to find savings in order of 10 to 15 % of the farms electricity consumption.
Project description
On the basis of measurements in a small number of representative milk producers assessed optimization potential by including to adjust the system, install frequency control refrigeration compressor and use heat exchangers for hot water production and during cooling of the refrigerant. In addition, the development of a management to ensure optimal concurrency between cold and heat needs and organizing the operations by price fluctuations in the electricity market. In addition, developed a heat exchanger that is more resistant to calcification. The newly developed system for milk cooling will be especially suitable for farms with automatic milking systems (AMS), which is widespread in Denmark, and the energy requirement for milk cooling is relatively high. It is estimated that the new system can save about half of the milk producers of energy for milk cooling, equivalent to more than 40 GWh/year.
Results

Based on pilot studies it can be concluded that there are significant savings to be gained by optimizing the installation and operation of combined installations for heating and cooling milk. It will be possible to find savings in order of 10 to 15 % of the farms electricity consumption. There can be expected variations in the savings due to variation in specific electricity consumption for individual farms. A small part of the farm  wil be able to achieve significantly higher savings.

The variety of solutions for milk cooling of milk producers has given significant complexity to the project but there are many areas for energy optimiziation at the milk producers.
