MegaBalance is to conduct an assessment of the potential for large scale energy storage & balancing with hydrogen in Denmark in the period 2015-2050. Focus will be on central production and conversion at Lille Torup gas cavern storage and using at potential Danish network of hydrogen refueling stations for providing grid balancing services.
Project description
MegaBalance is to conduct three major tasks:1) Projection for the Danish power market 2015-2050The impact of increased share of RE in the Danish power grid with regards to power price, production, consumption, variations and balancing need are to be projected. The evolvement of the power market will be paramount for the economical feasibility of hydrogen balancing. 2) Assessment of hydrogen balancing potential at Lille Torup gas cavern storageTechnical concepts for hydrogen balancing at the existing natural gas cavern storage at Lille Torup in Denmark are to be developed. The seasonal storage potential is to be assessed when used for hydrogen. Also the potential for utilization of waste heat for district heating and distribution of hydrogen via pipeline for de-central use is to be assessed. 3) Assessment of hydrogen balancing potential in a Danish HRS network 2015-2050Optimal Hydrogen Refuelling Station (HRS) operation strategies and sizing with regards to provision of balancing services are to be developed and the potential assessed. Use of waste heat for district heating are to be analysed and the impact of potentially available hydrogen via pipeline. For each balancing concept an economical feasibility assessment is to be conducted.
