Test of high pressure PEM electrolyser at hydrogen refueling station

Business Development

The HighPEM project is to develop and test a high pressurized PEM electrolyser at a Hydrogen Refuelling Station in Denmark. Based on the results a R&D & commercialization Roadmap is to be formulated for PEM electrolysis to the HRS market and analysis of the potential for PEM electrolysis to infuse renewable hydrogen in the Danish natural gas grid.

Project description

The HighPEM project is to develop and test a high pressurized PEM electrolyser at a Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS) in Denmark and formulate a R&D & commercialization Roadmap for PEM electrolysis including infusion of renewable hydrogen into the Danish natural gas grid.

PEM electrolysis can enable a very high outlet pressure (up to 100+ bar) which can help reduce cost for compression technology at HRS, reduce footprint and increase energy efficiency.

The HighPEM project will be one among few projects in the world with actual field-test of PEM electrolysis on 50bar in a HRS application. Present available PEM electrolysers typically only offers up to 30bar pressure whilst higher pressure mainly only have been tested in laboratories.

HighPEM are to further develop existing IRD PEM electrolyser technology presently used in the μCHP market by developing the technical interfaces with the HRS to enable a full integration and design considerations for modular scaling up of production capacity.

The PEM Electrolyser is to be installed at a HRS in Denmark and tested for a period of 12 months.

Danish Gasteknisk Center A/S (DGC) is to assist with expertise on CE documentation and test of the electrolyser and conduct hydrogen purity tests and analyses.

Results
The HighPEM project has developed and tested a high pressurized PEM electrolyser and defined the connection interface with hydrogen refuelling stations. Based on the results a R&D & commercialization Roadmap has been formulated for PEM elec-trolysis to the HRS market and analysis of the potential for PEM electrolysis to in-fuse renewable hydrogen in the Danish natural gas grid.
