Injector technology for green fuels in 4 stroke marine engines

Teknologisk Institut

The scope of the project is to develop and test an injector technology that will enable the use of alternative fuels in combination with conventional diesel fuel oils. The combustion of methanol and ammonia will be demonstrated in a heavy-duty engine with prototype injector solutions, designed for and manufactured with rapid prototyping methods, including metal 3D printing.

Project description

The maritime sector faces increasing pressure towards reducing its environmental footprint, both in terms of reducing the emission of CO2, as well as the emissions. The sector has committed itself to an ambitious CO2 reduction target, aiming at a 50 % reduction of the total emission in 2050 compared to 2008. New fuels are needed to achieve this new goal. Several candidate fuels have been proposed which can be produced with electricity and carbon capture. This project application concerns the development of injector technology for marine 4-stroke diesel engines. The new injector technology will enable the use of various alternative fuels. The need for this injector technology arises from the fact, that some of the most promising synthetic fuels proposed for the future, such as methanol and ammonia, are not suitable diesel replacements. The fuels will however be suitable in dual fuel solutions, in which a small amount of diesel fuel is co-injected to ignite the alternative fuels. In the project, a retrofit injector solution will be prepared and demonstrated for methanol, while the fundamental requirements for ammonia ignition and combustion will be investigated in a research based approach, as a first step towards implementation of this fuel.
