Geological storage of CO2 in the Danish subsurface: evaluation of the response of caprock and reservoir rocks on CO2 storage

This project confirmed the significance of the geological potential for long-term storage of CO2 in the deep subsurface under Danish rural areas. There are souitable reservoirs with adequately low permeability in overlying cap rocks and there is no risk of serious mineralogical changes caused by the stored CO2.

Project description

The ultimate scope of the project is to contribute to the reduction of CO_2 emission to the atmosphere by investigating if CO_2 can be effectively and safely stored in reservoirs in the Danish subsurface. The project will conduct a series of laboratory experiments with CO_2 injection to core samples of potential reservoirs. The samples will be petrographically and geochemically investigated before, during and after the CO_2 injection. The injection in the samples will be performed at reservoir conditions in terms of temperature and pressure, and the samples with CO_2 will be kept at reservoir conditions for several months. In addition, a series of cap rock investigations will be performed. Based on the experiments a thermodynamic geochemical modelling of the reactions between minerals, pore fluids and CO_2 will be carried out in order to describe the effect of CO_2 on reservoir and cap rocks.

Results
This project confirmed the significance of the geological potential for long-term storage of CO2 in the deep subsurface under Danish rural areas. There are souitable reservoirs with adequately low permeability in overlying cap rocks and there is no risk of serious mineralogical changes caused by the stored CO2. (Energy 11)
