Heat pumps for domestic hot tap water in combination with low temperature district heating
The overall purpose is to support the development of low temperature district heating (LTDH) (35-45 deg. C). The specific purpose is to analyse suitable low temperature concepts, and develop and demonstrate energy efficient solutions with domestic hot tap water tank in a system with a heat pump integrated in a traditional LTDH unit.
The purpose of this project is to integrate a heat pump into a Low-Temperature District Heating (LTDH) unit for producing hot tap water for domestic use. The high efficient heat pump is to solve the problem of generating hot tap water with LTDH at 35-45 deg. C. Thus, the objective is to develop a district heating unit that is competitive on a functional and investment-based level, compared to other heating systems in areas with low energy consumption. The unit will be implemented, measured and validated in five houses in a new residential estate with a district heating temperature of 45 deg. C. The project comprises of three phases: 1) A development and analysis phase 2) An implementation and validation phase 3) A communication phase. The first phase contains three work packages (WP): WP1: Problem description and delimitations, concept and system analyses, comparison with other technologies and assessment of potentials. WP2: Detailed analysis of concepts and selection of concept. WP3: Development of an optimal unit on a functional and laboratorial level. Second phase consists of: Description of the demonstration site, selection of houses to be tested and control groups, practical implementation, measurements and validation. Third phase consists of: Presentation of the optimal system, solution and results from the implementation. Publishing of articles for relevant magazines, a seminar about potentials and presentation of systems and concepts for the industry. The results should pave the way for creating new market potentials, generate more knowledge about LTDH and produce a new tool to encourage the expansion of district heating
The project has developed and demonstrated a district heating unit for low temperature district heating with integrated heating pumps (micro-boosters) for hot water production in the household. In the projects, different concepts of integration for the micro-booster have been analyzed. A system directly connected to the hot water tank, placed on the primary side, showed the most useful. The benefit about the system is: the opportunities to storage water by a low temperature (approx. 50°C) without any problems concerning legionella and with good energy efficiency.
The micro-booster have a COP at approx. 4,5 through it, while the COP for the hole heating system for hot water is many times higher because the first heating of hot water happens in the district heating.
The demonstration project that was installed in 4 houses in Birkerød showed that the system worked as expected.
Danfoss will make a further development of the heating unit and marked when the product is ready for it.
