Pariticipation in IEA Bioenergy Task 39 and 42 in 2010-2012

This IEA project aims at promoting international collaboration and knowledge exchange  through the participation in two task forces (39 and 42). Those task forces aim to tackle the issues related to research, development and deployment of technologies for production of bioenergy, liquid biofuels and chemicals from biomass. The project's objective is to promote Danish activities within the area and facilitate contacst between Danish and international stakeholders.

Project description

The project involves participating in the two IEA (International Energy Agency) Bioenergy Tasks 39 (Commercialization of 1st- and 2nd-Generation Liquid Biofuels from Biomass) and 42 (Biorefineries: Co-production of Fuels, Chemicals, Power and Materials from Biomass). The objective of the work is promote international collaboration and knowledge exchange on issues related to research, development and deployment of technologies for production of bioenergy, liquid biofuels and chemicals from biomass. An essential part of the project is to promote Danish activities within the area and facilitate contact between Danish and international stakeholders. The work will involve: a) Report on political strategies for implementation and support of research, demonstration and deployment of technologies for biorefineries and production of biofuels; b) Make technical, economical and environmental assessments of biorefinery concepts and identify promising chemicals/products that can be co-produced from biomass along with energy generation; c) Support multi-disciplinary partnerships between key stakeholders normally working in different market sectors; d) Collection and communication of information such as annual country reports, annual workshops and support education programs

Results

The project involves participation in the two international IEA networks IEA Bioenergy Task 39 “Commercialization of 1st – and 2nd – Generation Liquid Biofuels fra Biomass” and Task 42 “Biorefineries: Co-production of Fuel, Chemicals, Power and Materials from Biomass”.  Both networks work on promoting and supporting research, innovation, deployment and commercialization of technologies for sustainable production of bioenergy, including 1st and 2nd generation liquid biofuels, as well as biochemical and biomaterials.

The main objective is knowledge exchange between the participating countries and between stakeholders in the individual countries. The major outcome of the project in the period was to host a joint Task 39 and 42 meeting and organize an adjacent international biorefinery conference “Advanced Biofuels in a Biorefinery Approach”. The conference had 220 participants of which more than half was frome abroad. In addition, the work has involved collecting information and reporting status, initiatives and potential for development, demonstration and deployment of technologies. For this, one of the most important products in the period has been the report “Bio-based Chemicals – Value added products from biorefineries” published by Task 42 in 2012.
