GREEN - Center for power generation from renewable energy

A major technical development is required if Danish heat and power plants are to replace fossil fuels with biomass in the future. GREEN will facilitate this development by optimizing the agricultural production of biomass, developing improved combustion technology and methods for re-use of the ashes as fertilizer.

The project has resulted in significant new knowledge. Some of the findings with a high potential societal impact include: The development of new protective super-heater coatings, new low-cost fuel analysis methods, new and improved models for e.g. biomass devolatilization, and deposit build-up; and guidelines for increasing the life-time of SCR catalysts. The project has led to several new research projects within e.g. fuel pretreatment and corrosion management.
Project description
The purpose of GREEN has been to facilitate an efficient conversion of coal-fired power plants to biomass, retaining a high electrical efficiency with broad fuel-band. The project specifically addresses challenges related to biodust combustion on central power plants; i.e. the subjects investigated comprise:
• Agricultural biomass quality
• Fuel characterization
• Burner design
• Ash transformation, deposition and additives
• Development of advanced corrosion resistant super-heater materials
• Deactivation of SCR catalysts
• Utilization of ash as fertilizer
