CHP-plants on waste participating in the regulating power market

Incineration plants may optimize their participation in the electricity spot market and balancing markets by actively and fast bypassing the steam from the steam turbine. The possibility of this is demonstrated and the yearly profit of bypassing is simulated.
Project description
Incineration plants may optimize their participation in the electricity spot market and balancing markets by actively and fast bypassing the steam from the steam turbine. The possibility of this is demonstrated and the yearly profit of bypassing is simulated.
Results
Further developing wind energy in Denmark significantly increases the needed balancing power (Tertiary control). In this project it is demonstrated that the more than 200 MW electricity at the Danish incineration plants are able to provide both positive and negative balancing power. Positive balancing power may be provided in hours where the market price is so low, that it is not feasible to sell the electricity in the spot market thus bypassing the steam from the steam turbine. Demonstrations and simulations has shown that it is technical possible and often economical feasible to participate in both the spot market and the balancing market.
