Straw logistics

The main purpose of the project was to identify measures for lowering the price of straw delivered to power plants, mainly by developing a new high density straw press for Hesston size bales. The aim was to increase the weight of a Hesston bale from 500 to about 1000 kg. E2's part of the project was to produce 65 heavy Hesston bales, transport, handling and firing tests of these at the Avedøre (AVV2) and Masnedø (MKV) power plants. The results showed that the press was able to increase the weight to 900 kg, and it was estimated that it is realistic in a further development to increase the weight to 1000 kg. Handling and transport of the heavy bales appeared to be possible with the existing equipment at AVV2 and MKV. 56 bales were fired at MKV and 8 at AVV2 with only minor adjustment needed
