COmmercial BReakthrough of Advanced Fuel Cells II - COBRA II
COBRA II is a continuation of a technology development platform for High Temperature fuel cells covering the
development of the stack and its components as well as the system integration of complete systems.
The outcome is a high efficiency, cost effective, generic multi kW integrated methanol fuel cell system that is relevant for
a number of specific applications.
The technology developed in this project will be competitive in a verified and proven market where
thousands of fuel cell systems are already being deployed. The COBRA program has already show good
results and the ambition is to create further jobs and sustainable growth In the companies involved and
ancillary industries. The technology offers a viable and cost effective solution to reduce CO2 emission and
create a 100% renewable energy system in Denmark.
The HT PEM fuel cell system has an integrated fuel reformer that can convert Methanol into hydrogen and
enables reuse of the fuel cell exhaust heat. This techonology offers a very high efficiency with a cheap, renewable and
easy to handle fuel. The renewable methanol can be biologically made from biomass or synthesized from
hydrogen and carbon recycling.
The main objective of COBRA II is to take the results and advancements from COBRA I and apply them to
the next stage of the COBRA development stages – this includes an increased focus on an integrated
system with balance of plant components as well as core technology, more specifically MEA, Stack and
reformer.
