Energy renovation of existing detached houses - experience and new solutions

Statens Byggeforskningsinstitut (SBi)

The project purpose is to promote energy efficiency as energy renovation and converting of oil-fired boiler in Danish detached houses in areas outside district heating and in areas with less financial surplus.

Existing detached housing provide a considerable part of the potential for future energy savings, though it is also well known that it is difficult to make home owners energy retrofit their home. In this project the Danish experiences from Utilities and local authorities on how to encourage home owners to energy retrofit their home are collected and analysed.
Project description

A significant element in the government energy strategy is energy efficiency of existing buildings. Many of these buildings are placed in that part of Denmark, where the prices, fortune and incomes are low and where there might be a lower social energy to complete changes. The project purpose is to promote energy efficiency as energy renovation and converting of oil-fired boiler in Danish detached houses in areas outside district heating and in areas with less financial surplus. This i done by summarize earlier experiences and create an overview of relevant players and problems and based on this compose a targeted campagne material that followering will be tested and developed further in concrete projects.

Results

Existing detached housing provide a considerable part of the potential for future energy savings, though it is also well known that it is difficult to make home owners energy retrofit their home. In this project the Danish experiences from Utilities and local authorities on how to encourage home owners to energy retrofit their home are collected and analysed. Experiences point at that one-way information has a limited impact, and that the personal contact with the house owners from an energy adviser is much more effect full though also much more expensive. The local authorities have good experiences with different forms of governance approached where different kinds of actors are brought together, including utilities, craftsmen, energy advisors and banks, and for the local authorities it is often a strive to create local economic grow that is the main driver for this approach. Foliowing recommendation from this review the project continued to develop a specific tool for bank advisors on how to approach homeowners and discuss energy retrofit with them as well as developed a specific material for a local village on how to transform their heating into a collective district heating solution.
