FlexGas – Electric heater in domestic gas boiler for flexible energy consumption

The project aims to develop, test and demonstrate electric heater to be fitted to existing residential gas installations as a means of providing additional flexibility to the power system.
A business model for market introduction will be developed and tested, based on investigation of potential and economy for both the consumer and society.

The project aimed to develop, test and demonstrate an electric heater to be fitted to existing residential gas installations as a means of providing additional flexibility to the power system.
Project description

The idea is that in periods with larger generation of RE power (wind and solar) and low electricity prices the electric heater will make it possible to replace gas consumptions with electricity consumption for heating.
The main objective is that in cooperation with the hot water tank manufacturer METERO THERM and communication expert NeoGrid and DGC will develop 3 system solutions for typical residential boiler systems and have them evaluated in the DGC laboratory and demonstrated in the field. These are expected to be able to cover for instance the major part of approx. 350,000 gas boiler installations existing in Denmark today, thereby providing the major part of a 700 MW flexible power consumption potential.

We will also evaluate the potential of the above solutions and develop and test 1-2 business models to be used by concept developer INSERO, aggregator NeoGrid Technologies and the balance responsible power company Neas Energy (both short term and long term). Furthermore, the financial framework of implementing the technical solution will be investigated. This will include the optimal solution for society as well as the necessary financial and price incentives for private implementation of the solution.

Results

The test results from the laboratory and field demonstration have shown that the plants are working, and that the interaction of boiler, electric heater and control box is as expected and desired.
The intention was also to develop and test a model to promote market implementation. Therefore, a calculation model was made to simulate operation economy and potential savings. At best, however, it was only possible to demonstrate savings of approx. 400 DKK/year per installation. This will motivate neither district heating companies nor end users to choose this solution.
