Danish participation in IEAs Task 24 “Economic impact assessment of e-mobility”

Dansk Elbil Alliance

Danish participation in the economic impact assessment of E-mobility under the IEA. Each country collects E-mobility economic data in a country report. These are used to conduct a common benchmarking that will lay out the competitive advantages and possible focus areas. This benchmarking is communicated to national interests.

Danish Electric Vehicle Alliance and Clean Tech Insight was invited by the Danish Energy Agency to participate in the work of the International Energy Agency's technology network for electric and hybrid cars - IEA-HEV Task 24. After an application for the EUDP program in the fall of 2014, the parties were supporting to participate in the Task 24.

Project description

The International Energy Association, IEA, has initiated Task 24 under their Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Implementing Agreement. The outcome is an economic impact assessment of E-mobility that allows for a benchmark of the E-mobility sectors of the participating countries.

The purpose of this EUDP-application will ensure Danish participation in Task 24. This entails an identification of the Danish E-mobility value chain and the gathering of economic data about the sector.

Through collection of this knowledge, areas of growth potential within the Danish E-mobility sector can be described, since the economic aspects of the E-mobility value chain for the first time thoroughly have been identified and benchmarked against similar sectors in other countries.

Through Task 24, Denmark gains: 1) identification of the value chain for E-mobility, incl. entrants and economic strengths and weaknesses of the Danish value chain; 2) benchmarking of the Danish sector to other countries; 3) exposure of Danish competences and technology in global cooperation; 4) knowledge of and insight to foreign markets and business opportunities; 5) access to a global network and potential business partners; 6) identification of factors that influence Danish growth opportunities in the E-mobility market; 7) communication of knowledge, network and results to national interests.

Results

The aim of the project has been supporting the work of Task 24 by preparing a Danish national report, where economic potentials in the Danish value chain for e-mobility should be uncovered.

The preparation of the Country Report has included:

  • Identification of the Danish value chain for e-mobility, including the sector players

  • Identification of the Danish strengths in e-mobility

The projects has revealed that Denmark has established a number of positions of strength within smart grid technology and e-mobility which means that Denmark has a good basis for benefitting from the opportunities that the e-mobility industry can offer.

It is estimated that the commercial Danish positions of strength within e-mobility are related to:

  • Components
  • Infrastructure
  • Mobility service

The possibilities of a powerful e-mobility sector in Denmark is also strengthened by factors such as; short geographical distances and relatively high population density, that the population has a positive basic attitude to green energy, which the energy system also provides and that a relatively large proportion of the population lives in such a way that it is relatively simple to install equipment for home charging.
