Dansih participation in IEA ECES Annex 30 "Thermal Energy Storage for Cost-Effective Energy Management and CO2 Mitigation"

Effective thermal energy storage (TES, Thermal Energy Storage) will be used as a central technology in the flexible energy systems of the future where increasing part of the energy needs will be covered by fluctuating sustainable energy. TES is needed if the full potential of the available energy streamlining in the industry is to be exercised since it demands a bigger or smaller unlinking of the usage and source (eg. waste water). TES is already used numerous places in the district heating system and to curtain extend in the industry. But as is stated by the Energistyrelsens technology strategies within solar energy and system integration it is still need for further development to be able to gain the goal of 100% fossil free heat and electricity production in 2035 and to ensure the leading position of Danish instustry as world leading within this part of the field.
Project description

Danish participation in IEA ECES Annex 30 will contribute to this both through hosting the leading international knowledge, and presentation of the Danish know how and results to the international and research community. The purpose of the annex is to identify and evaluate the potential for implementing the TES as a transverse technology to obtain:

  •  Bigger energy efficiency and process integration
  •  Bigger system flexibility
  •  Bigger exploitation of sustainable heat- and refrigeration resources
  •  Contribute to evening out the load and stabilizing the electrical net

Both sensible, latent and thermoelectrical teknologies will be researched. The main objective is to develop an method to characterize and evaluate the thermal energy storage systems capacity both technically and economically within the industry, power plants, industry buildings, district heating and transport. The method will be tested on series of realized thermoelectric storage to arrive at the best and most costeffective integration of TES that can be found.
