DMDS – Demonstration of Modular Drive System

The purpose of DMDS – Demonstration of Modular Drive System is to develop and demonstrate a new type of drive technology for large scale test benches. The Modular Drive System (MDS) will allow for the construction of larger full scale nacelle test benches while lowering test bench cost.

Project description

In DMDS – Demonstration of Modular Drive System, the project focus is to make large scale nacelle test facilities technologically and economically feasible for the wind industry, by developing and demonstrating a new modular drive technology.

This project proposes the demonstration of a new type of drive system to be used in full scale nacelle test benches. The Modular Drive System (MDS) relies on several drive motors to drive a single ring gear which is mounted on the main shaft of the test bench. The main incentive for using this concept is a lowering of the test bench cost while increasing the concept robustness.

The project will be executed in cooperation between the company R&D Test Systems A/S and university partner DTU Mechanical Engineering.
