Energy efficient ventilation heat pumps

There is a double aim of the project:

  • To change to low-GWP refrigerants, including natural refrigerants
  • To increase the energy efficiency.

This shall be done without compromising the safety of the products and by ensuring that the products are competitive on the global market. The aim is to increase the efficiency of the exhaust air heat pump by 10 %.

Project description

Nilan is the biggest manufacturer of heat pumps in Denmark. Nilan is specialized in building heat pumps which are built into ventilation systems and in heat pumps for low energy houses. In 2017, Nilan build 2650 ventilation heat pumps for residential houses.

Changing to new refrigerants will be a gain, because the new EU “F-gas regulation” is causing huge rises in prices for F-gases. For many years, the industry has been in process of changing towards natural refrigerants. This has happened in the refrigeration industry, but not for heat pumps.

In this project, new technology using low-GWP refrigerants in ventilation heat pumps shall be tested. A new refrigerant (e.g. propane) will increase the energy efficiency of the products, and it is important to ensure the safety. The new technology must be competitive.

The challenge is using flammable refrigerants when delivering heat to the inlet air in the ventilation for a house, in a safe and energy efficient way.
