Validation of Industrial Active Aerodynamic Add-ons

The technologies in scope aim at increasing the aerodynamic efficiency of wind turbines, reducing turbine load levels, and increasing the authority of control of wind turbines through additional degrees of freedom in the control of power and loads.
Project description
The project VIAs aims at demonstrating and validating the full scale system integration of active flow control devices for performance enhancement of wind turbines. The successfully developed active flap system for rotor blades (EUDP 2015-I Induflap2) and further systems developed by SiemensGamesa will be integrated into a full scale multi-Megawatt turbine for demonstration of performance enhancement and load control. This integration requires maturing of peripheral subsystems to Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL6), development of novel measurement instrumentation and techniques, demonstration
of manufacturing concepts suitable for serial production, development of full-scale turbine servo control strategies, increasing the integration readiness level (IRL) to IRL6, as well as performing a thorough system characterization at lab and field test level. The
project partners SiemensGamesa, DTU, and Rehau, bring a high degree of expertise and experience, all of them being world leading entities in their fields.
