District Heating used for decentralized cooling using STAC technology
STAC Technology will demonstrate on-site cooling using District Heating as the energy source for
driving the cooling solution for temperatures above zero.
driving the cooling solution for temperatures above zero.
Project description
STAC cooling solution are water-based compact turbine cooling solutions which are hooked up toa district heating installation in for instance a commercial or industrial building to supply cooling.
Steam is generated under vacuum by the hot water delivered through the District heating grid. The
steam spins a turbine running a compressor unit functionally as a traditional air conditioning unit.
The entire system is water based, thereby achieving the highest possible efficiencies when
evaporating water as refrigerant.
We propose to use the existing district heating grid to provide decentralized cooling as opposed to
the traditional idea of establishing a cold grid next to the hot grid. Having high efficiency, this
technology is expected to be offered at running costs lower than current cooling alternatives.
In this project, we aim to demonstrate decentralized cooling of 250 kW capacity by using district
heating as a heat source. The proposed project has two major technical tasks:
- Design and fabrication of a 250 kW turbo-compressor machinery combining both radial and axial turbine technology.
- Implementation of a 250 kW cooling unit coupled to the District heating network.
