Fast charge Laboratory
Fast charging is one of the main challenges of emobility, with the goal of charging a EV as quickly as filling a tank of gas. This requires fast charging to fill the battery in less than 10 minutes. However, the high current can damage the batteries if they are not designed for it. Additionally, it requires high power charging stations delivering up to 350 kW. This can severely tax the local grid if several chargers are connected at the same time, leading to extensive upgrades needed for the grid. The fast-charging lab will address the problem on both the battery cell level and on the charging infrastructure level by adding a high current battery tester and a ultra-high-power EV charging station to the existing EnergyFlexLab at DTI. On cell level the lab will enable testing to secure that cells maintain their performance at high currents and to clarify the added degradation and safety issues. On the charging infrastructure side, the new equipment will be integrated into EnergyFlexLab allowing for the charging station to be connected to PV, BESS and grid to evaluate how to integrate chargers into the grid while maximizing renewable energy usage and minimizing peak load on the grid.
