To develop a new paradigm in traffic control that can help minimize energy lost in intersections, taking into account more available data about the traffic and energy use.

Project description

Today, the ever-denser traffic is primarily controlled by light signals using simple control algorithms, based on 30-year-old paradigms. As a consequence, large amounts of energy are wasted daily in traffic. More advanced solutions are offered today, but as expensive, centrally controlled models that only contribute to optimizing waiting time at an intersection. Even the most advanced control algorithms on the market today do not take into account the technological shift underway in traffic, with an increasing share of electric vehicles. SmartAI is developing a paradigm shift, where the latest advances in AI modelling are combined with known traffic models around fossil fuel vehicles and the latest knowledge about electric vehicles, for a next-generation optimization model that can ensure multivariate and balanced optimization of traffic flow. The goal is to reduce energy loss from traffic regulation by 10%
