Exhaust Gas Valve for High Temperatures

This project will develop an upgraded exhaust valve for large diesel engines. The new exhaust valve will allow higher exhaust gas temperatures, leading to higher waste heat recovery system efficiency and longer valve life, as well as engine operation on alternative, CO2 friendly fuels such as natural gas.

Project description

The objective of this project is to develop a new sturdy marine engine exhaust valve that can endure both higher exhaust gas temperatures and operation on natural gas and other alternative fuels. The new valve is the key to achieve large CO2 savings, especially on plants fitted with a waste heat recovery (WHR) system exploiting the hot exhaust gas for steam production. The new exhaust valve will contribute to a faster market penetration of the new gas engines, because it will be capable of enduring the increased wear.

In addition, the project's new robust exhaust valve design will solve the wear issue on gas engines, where the exhaust valve is exposed to heavy wear because gas engines operate on non-lubricating combustibles.

The partners of the project include MAN Diesel & Turbo (MDT), Sandvik Powder Solutions (SPS) and DTU MEK. MDT will manufacture the valve and use it on its engines. MDT's role will be to test and modify the design developed by SPS. SPS produces the advanced material using the unique process technology called hot isostatic pressing. DTU MEK carries out modelling. Service tests will be carried out.
